Flame Resistant Shirts Are Worth It

Flame resistant shirts are a necessity. Whether working with electricity, fire or hazardous chemicals, the protection provided by FR clothing can save lives.

Flame resistant shirts were invented by chemist Gay-Lussac in the late 1800's. He used two types of salt on regular cotton clothing and produced results that would eventually lead to the patent of the first regulation FR shirt in 1953. That was also the year it became illegal to perform any city or government work with electricity, heat, or flames without FR clothing.

Today, flame resistant shirts can be found in store and online, at places such as www.youruniformsource.com . They resemble a regular button up with a collar, and they come in neutral colors such as navy blue or khaki, so there's no need to fear the garish neon yellow so many workers have to wear (although FR shirts come in neon as well). Furthermore, stiff FR fabric is a thing of the past, as softer fabric is now available. The average cost for a quality FR shirt can range from $40 to $90; the most expensive can cost up to $140. Despite the seemingly outrageous amount, FR shirts are no waste of money.

When purchasing a flame resistant shirt, you buy so much more, for not only is it impervious to fire, but it also provides protection from the elements due to the thermal design of the fabric. FR clothing is self-extinguishing; when put in contact with a flaming source, the material WILL IGNITE; however, as soon as the garment is removed from the origin of the flame, the fabric DOUSES THE FIRE on the garment immediately. Finally, the flame resistant shirt or garment is made to last. In the past, there has been speculation as to the reliability and longevity of FR clothing, but leading technology has allowed manufacturers to create a piece of fabric that will resist wear and tear and last as long as the shirt itself does.

Durable, reliable, and worth the cost, flame resistant shirts not only provide comfortable protection from the most extreme elements, but they also give workers the longevity they need in a garment to perform their task well and for a long time.
